Climate

Bequia Latitude and LongtitudeBequia’s tropical climate makes it an ideal year-round destination — especially with its warm, sunny winters. Bequia lies at 13° 0′ North latitude and 61° 15′ West longitude, just north of the equator.

Temperatures: Over the year, the temperature varies only a few degrees, with occasional lows of 23°C / 70°F and highs of 32°C / 92°F. Generally, the weather is reliably warm all year round: it’s in the 26–28°C / 78–82°F range almost all the time.

November to February are comparatively cool months, with March to October being the warmest. On the coast, average daytime temperatures tend to be one or two degrees warmer than inland, with the nights being a degree or so cooler. The tropical trade winds always guarantee a pleasant breeze to ensure that your vacation in this paradise will be an enjoyable one.

Dry -v- Rainy Seasons: Despite its ancient name of The Island of Clouds, Bequia’s hills are much lower than the peaks of St Vincent and so they do not receive as many rain showers. The average rainfall is about 75mm (3″) per month but this usually falls in short-lived thundery showers in the late afternoon or evening. Each month, 22 or 23 dry days are typical. Nine or ten hours of brilliant sunshine per day can be expected. Although May sees the commencement of the official rainy season, amounts are small compared with those found in other tropical areas of the world.

It is very hard to define a rainy season — there is seldom a whole day of rain. It is usually very dry during the months of January, February and March. The dry season runs from approximately January to May and the rainy season from June through December, with July being the wettest.

Hurricanes: Bequia is far south in the hurricane belt and although tropical storms will occasionally approach in the peak months of August to October, most disturbances either pass well to the north or dissipate before they reach the Grenadines chain. Check out the Caribbean Hurricane Network for a review of hurricane history in the Grenadines.

Earthquakes: Significant earthquakes are relatively rare, despite that fact that the entire Caribbean chain of islands lie in the vicinity of a fault line and are primarily of volcanic origin. Of all the Leeward Islands, Barbados and the Grenadines are historically the least likely to suffer the effects of an earthquake. The U.S. Geological Survey website has a wealth of information pertaining to earthquakes in the Caribbean.
